Czech Working Line: who are we?

We are working line German Shepherd Dog breeders. Our niche is selling super healthy and exceptionally easy to train working line German Shepherd puppies for sale. Our dogs’ pedigrees primarily consist of Czech and DDR– east German–  working lines. Every litter we produce are from 100% imported working line German Shepherd IGP titled dogs. With this commitment to health and trainability, we are actively selecting from those dogs with a proven capacity for high level obedience and protection work. As dog trainers with a focus on trained protection dogs, we are laser focused on the genetics of our dogs.

This is why we only raise true working line German Shepherds: no show line dogs!

Producing healthy working line GSD puppies that live a long time is one of our core values. There is hardly a week that goes by where we don’t hear heartbreaking examples of poor breeding practices. In just the last few weeks (as of writing this article), we heard three such examples. A lady from up by Wichita called with questions about health of the working line German Shepherds in contrast to her show line dog. Absolutely heartbreaking, her four year old dog was already crippled from severe, crippling hip and elbow dysplasia by four years of age. The second call was from a couple in Dallas. Like the lady from Witchita, they were researching the differences between true, working line German Shepherds and the common American show line dogs. Sadly, their show line dog had been diagnosed with terminal cancer by only 1 1/2 years of age. And this does not even address the issue they had been facing due to the extreme sloped hindquarters and hips on their puppy! The third phone call was from a couple training in schutzhund. Early onset degenerative myelopathy (DM) abruptly ended that!

You won’t find show line dogs on our property. Not a single one! The modern roach back destroys sound hips and elbows (for articles spelling out in greater detail problems relating to the roach back and hip dysplasia see here and here). We are radically committed to the working line German Shepherd as the only true representation of the German Shepherd breed. As one of the founders of this breed (Captain Max von Stephanitz) so famously taught, “all German Shepherds are working dogs, else they are not German Shepherds.” Imagine a famous college whose basketball team are all tall students who appear to exhibit grace and athleticism— until they set foot on the basketball court. But, once they do, none of these students has ever practiced shooting. While they might be athletic, they possess no ability to actually put the ball in the basket. These students might be athletes. But, without the ability to consistently put the ball in the basket they are NOT basketball players. In a similar line of reasoning, Captain Stephanitz’ point was that a German Shepherd that cannot do the things for which the German Shepherd breed was developed to do, such a dog is truly NOT A German Shepherd. And this is why here at Czech Working Line we are radically committed to only raising litters of working line German Shepherd puppies. Every working line German Shepherd puppy for sale offered by our family will have a straighter toppling. They will never have that extreme slope to their hindquarters common to the show line dogs. Pedigrees on our working line German Shepherd puppies are always from IGP/Schutzhund titled lines. By putting dogs through exams in obedience, tracking and protection the dogs prove themselves as worthy of breeding. And this is what sets the working line German Shepherd apart from show lines, especially the American show lines.

Our working line German Shepherds are actively selected for a straighter, more natural topline. It is beyond contestation that GSDs as a breed will continue to struggle with hip dysplasia until Shepherd buyers en masse reject the excess of modern show line roach backs. For our family, it’s not enough for one of our dogs to simply pass its hip/elbow certifications. We go the second mile in only using stud dogs with the highest possible hip ratings. Great under OFA and an A rating under the European rating system. All our dogs have passed hSame goes for DNA testing. Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) being a recessive gene requires two parents positive for puppy to be DM affected. By only ever using lab tested DM negative stud dogs no working line German Shepherd puppy we sell will ever be DM affected. In order for a dog to be DM affected they must carry two copies of the gene. As a recessive gene, a dog with two gene would have inherited one from mom and one from dad. The dog can never inherit two copies from one parent. A DM affected dog with two copies is always the result of shoddy German Shepherd Dog breeders pairing and breeding two dogs where BOTH dogs carry the DM gene. Sadly, in this era where DNA testing has become so easy and affordable, such a practice is entirely preventable. The cost for DM testing is minuscule— maybe $50. So there is absolutely no reason to try and save money on testing. Ok. rant done! Here at Czech Working Line German Shepherds we test for DM. We ONLY use DM clear stud dogs. As such, it is impossible to produce a DM affected puppy in one of our litters of working line German Shepherd puppies for sale.

All our working line German Shepherd litters are from IGP titled pedigrees— many including WUSV/world champion Schutzhund winners in their titles.

Our commitment to selling working line German Sheperd puppies is to produce dogs that are super easy to train. This means we have to start with breeding stock that are far more trainable than the average GSD. Over and over the dogs in our pedigrees have demonstrated a proven a high capacity for obedience, tracking and protection work by passing exams. Unlike a dog that earns an AKC show championship, the a working line German Shepherd title requires the dog pass an objective exam. There are three exams a dog must pass to earn an IGP title. The dog most prove its ability to exhibit a high level of obedience. It must prove exceptional in tracking. And finally, the working line German Shepherd dog must be able to hold a prospective intruder at bay while barking ferociously, biting (and releasing) on command. A titled working line German Shepherd has been proven as a trained protection dog. These IGP titles require dogs pass objective exams. It’s not enough to pass one or two of the exams. Earning a Schutzhund title requires passing all three exams (obedience, tracking and protection) for each of the three working line titles; IGP 1, IGP 2, and IGP 3. Such working line titles are intended to weed out the dogs with poor nerves, fearful dogs or overly aggressive dogs. Here at Czech Working Line, a majority of our customers purchase one of our German Shepherd puppy with the end goal of protecting the family. For this reason, we zealously select for a good off switch. Human aggression is simply not tolerated. Not ever. We have a zero tolerance for such behavior. A good off switch means even our highly trained IGP stud dogs will curl up on the couch with our kids at night watching cartoons. A good off switch means the dog has a broad enough breadth to its temperament to protect its family because he/she LOVES his family. That’s the kind of dog we prioritize here at Czech Working Line.

 

This laser focus of only offering super trainable working line German Shepherd puppies for sale means we spend a ton of time researching pedigrees on working-dogs.com. If you find yourself wanting to do your own research, you might consider a subscription to this site. It’s about a hundred bucks a year for an annual subscription. But what a great research tool. My wife and I spend untold hours researching pedigrees. Third party vet/lab verified health results can be posted, as can Schutzhund/IGP titles and scores.

 

How do we produce dogs with a longer than average anticipated life expectancy? That’s a great question. The answer is simple. Prioritize breeding stock with a proven history of living long, healthy lives. Here at Czech Working Line German Shepherds, one of our all time fan favorite stud dogs is world champion Gero z Beounske basty. Gero turns eleven years old in March of 2025. At eleven years old he had multiple confirmed litters on the ground. It’s not just enough for a dog to live a long time, we want to see a high quality of life. We have both a Gero daughter and grand daughter. Health and longevity are two key reasons why we love this line. Improving the breed requires GSD breeders such as ourselves do the hard work of pedigree research. Many dogs just don’t make the cut and must be excluding from the breeding process!

 

We prioritize GSDs with a great off switch.

After health we are looking for highly trainable working line German Shepherd dogs with a great off switch. By off switch me mean a dog after protection work can switch off and love getting his belly scratched by the family. How strong is the off switch? Since we only use highly trained guard dogs as our studs, they have to be the kind of dogs that are safe around our children. Its imperative they have a great off switch. All our studs dogs are IGP titled. Our current male Querro is an IGP 3 titled Czech import. Our goal is the same for all our puppies. We want to see a lion’s share of our working line German Shepherd puppies for sale clearly showing this same character trait. How do we do this? We do so by proving our dogs against an objective standard. By only using titled working line German Shepherds. Its why we never mix in show line dogs.

Working line German Shepherds: the ideal personal protection dog.

The working line German Shepherd is the ideal protection dog. Our German Shepherd puppies for sale have been selected to be really easy to train. Quick learners, our dogs excel in both obedience and protection work. They thrive as family guard dogs and as more serious trained guard dogs. Well bred GSDs are often the go-to dog for law enforcement and many military applications. Our IGP 3 titled stud Querro is an exquisite example of what we strive to produce in our next generation. It’s like Christmas for our family every time someone with one of our puppies sends us a photo that looks like a little mini-me Querro.

We prioritize a good off switch and dogs that are good with kids. They serve those homes as companion dogs and as good family protection dogs. It is for this reason we prioritize a good off switch. We have six children ourselves. We know how important it is for a trained guard dog to be safe around children. So this off switch is an absolute must in a good family protection dog. But our dogs aren’t just good for families. They thrive in more serious law enforcement as well as in Schutzhund.

A good argument can be made that each of these countries has contributed immensely to the breed and examining individual pedigrees will likely provide the greatest insight whether a particular bloodline will suit you particular needs.

We get a few litters here, then our girls take a break and then we’ll get another couple of girls cycling together. We are not commercial breeders. So we don’t always have litters on the ground.
