How to use Engagement to Supercharge your working line German Shepherd puppy training

Are you interested in Supercharging your puppy training?

What if I could show you a simple way to accelerate progress in your puppy training? And, it would be fun! If that catches your attention, read this article through to the end. There ought to be some great ideas backed by science that should not only help your puppy’s training progress more quickly, but you get to have more fun with your puppy while on this journey? Does that have your attention? I hope so! Here are Czech Working Line German Shepherds, one of our goals is to provide great information to our customers on how they can enjoy their German Shepherd puppies more with each passing year. A well trained puppy is one of those ways that makes this happen.

First, what effective training for your working line German Shepherd puppy is not.

Effective training won’t be boring. When you were in school, how many students get excited about rote memorization? Isn’t it interesting how the age old punishment of “writing lines,” writing out an “I will not do ….” over and over was one of those old fashioned punishments teachers would require of students who misbehaved. Forced repetition was a punishment. Rarely if ever would this action be something students wanted to do. So let’s shift back towards dog training. When we training our puppies through rote memorization somewhat equivalent to how students were punished by “writing lines,” why would we be surprised when our puppies lack engagement. Back to children for a moment. How many children of wealthy parents that have been spoiled have you met. Children that get whatever they want and are lavished with gifts are rarely children that are enjoyable to be around. These are often spoiled, entitled children. In the not so distant past when our society was less “politically correct,” these kind of children would have been described as “spoiled brats.” So how do we avoid raising puppies that on the one hand dread training because who likes rote memorization, and on the other hand, how do we avoid raising puppies that are spoiled brats because we bribe them with food and spoil them at every step in their puppy training?

What if our puppy training created happier, disciplined puppies?

Think of a time when you were having so much fun you completely lost track of time. Maybe it was a simple game of tag with the neighborhood kids when you were young. Playing an addictive video game. Perhaps you were playing golf, hiking in the mountains. Whatever it was, time can pass very slow, or it can seem to fly so fast we wonder where it went. Unlike the drudgery of standing at the chalkboard (in the olden days), maybe the whiteboard today, and writing the same thing over and over, when we are doing something we find interesting, we forget about time and get lost in the moment. Finding ways to play with your puppy where time flys by just like it does for you and I when we are doing something we love. This is how you supercharge your puppy training. When your puppy sees the time it spends with you as so fun that time gets distorted, this is when the progress your puppy makes in developing discipline and obedience really begins take hold!

Play with your German Shepherd puppy so it loves the puppy training journey.

Learn to have so much fun with your puppy while you train that your puppy learns to love the journey of training with you. Focusing on the journey rather than the destination of “my puppy is now obedient” will go a long way towards getting your own self into the kind of state that will help your puppy respond so much more quickly. Think about those pro athletes that have lost their love for the game and are just in it for the paycheck. These players will nearly always be somewhat miserable and typically not the greatest kind of person to be around. School teachers that have lost their passion for changing students lives. Did you ever have a soured teacher of this nature? Not a great person to spend time with. Truth be told, if we were honest, you and I have most likely found ourselves in this very place ourselves. Getting burnt out on something we once loved kind of sucks the joy out of living. Getting back to the “flow state” where time just flies changes our entire emotional state of being. The same will be true with your puppy. Helping your puppy get into the flow state where your puppy is having so much fun that time just flies, this is key to supercharging your puppy’s training adventure.

Getting your puppy to play changes your puppy training from drudgery to engagement.

Human studies how top executives in business were 500% more productive while they were working in a highly engaged “flow state.” Why is this? While fully engaged in this “flow state,” the human brain is locked in and paying attention. New neural pathways develop in the brain. This same thing occurs while training your puppy. If you are slowing getting success with your puppy by bribing with food, the puppy isn’t thinking about the thing you want it to learn, its thinking, how do I get that tasty treat. Those new neural pathways that lead to unconscious habit forming take a long time to grow. The same is true when we train our puppies through the drudgery of over and over getting our puppy to do the same thing. We bore them to death. Not literally. But what feels like punishment to children as they write lines can often feel like punishment to our little German Shepherd puppies as we train them. Change this process to one of games and fun where your puppy learns to obey and practice discipline as they play, and your puppy enters flow state. No longer are your training sessions bribery or drudgery. They become a time where your puppy is fully engaged. They enter their flow state and those new neural pathways accelerate growth. Your puppy is happy and learns so much faster. Have you been bribing your puppy with food or boring it to death with monotonous repetition. Considering adding games and play as a primary means towards developing skills and obedience as your work on supercharging your working line German Shepherd’s puppy training. It will make worlds of difference.
