Variation has to do with pedigree, although all our dogs come from some of the world’s top scoring, IGP titled pedigrees. Every puppy come with AKC registration. Our “Czech Working Line Puppy Boot Camp” has two phases that cover four weeks each of training per phase.

Each phase of our Puppy Boot Camp costs $1500 for 30 days of training or $2500 for 60 days. Training starts at 6 weeks of age.

Both phases of our “Puppy Boot Camp” cover introductory obedience themes. These include but are not limited to:

• crate training
• potty training
• leash training
• sit
• stay
• lay down
• drop chew toy

Phase one introduces these concepts and goes from 6-10 weeks of age. Phase two further drills down on cementing in these obedience skills and extends from weeks 10-14.  It’s an intensive training where we puppies are in our home, sitting under our kitchen table and learning to be part of a family as if we were going to keep that puppy long term ourselves. We transport and deliver our puppies all over Alabama: Huntsville, AL; Birmingham, AL; Montgomery, AL; Mobile, AL; or Tuscaloosa, AL.

Our “Czech Working Line Puppy Boot Camp” is our most common training option. But some of you know you plan on pursuing some kind of protection training. And you are wanting help getting that right foundation laid right from day one.

3. At Risk (DM/DM): The dog has two copies of the mutated gene and is at risk of developing DM later in life.

Up to Date (UTD) vaccinations mean your puppy will have received a minimum of these vaccinations by 8/9 weeks of age— more if your puppy is older.

In addition to being up to date on vaccinations, your puppy will have been preventatively treated for parasites before leaving our home.

*** A brief note of observation: that your puppy is up to date on vaccinations will not mean your puppy will be done with vaccinations. This simply means your puppy has received appropriate vaccinations for the age of your puppy at the time you take the puppy home. In most all cases you will need to continue with additional vaccines under the guidance of your local vet. Up to date vaccinations does not mean the puppy is DONE with all vaccinations and won’t need any more.

We feed Diamond Hi Energy (in purple bag). We feed this until the puppies are 12-14 weeks of age.

At this time, our protocol here at our home is to switch to Diamond Naturals (large breed) lamb and rice. 

We find the Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice a fairly good quality food at a reasonable price. Ingredients are excellent and our dogs seem to thrive on this kibble.

With that said, many customers are already feeding one or more current dogs something different. By no means would you need to keep one of our puppies on the kibble we use just because that is what we use. Feel free to transition your new puppy over the course of a few days. 

We don’t free feed our puppies. By this we mean we don’t leave food out all the time. 

Free access to food at all times can make it difficult to potty training puppies. They graze all day long. And with constant access to food, they turn into little pooping machines.

We find it works better to feed puppies twice a day until about 6-9 months of age, after which we switch to once a day.

We typically feed our growing puppies as much as they will eat. We find our dogs rarely get over weight, especially while they are growing. 

We feed as much as they need, then after they are done eating, we take away their food. This helps a lot when it comes to potty training. 

*** A word of caution: occasionally we hear from customers who rigidly feed their dogs according to the label on their kibble bag. Sometimes this can result in drastically underfeeding puppies. For our bloodlines (we can’t speak to other dogs from other bloodlines), we find 90% do not over eat. So we feed as much as they will eat. We moderate their food only if we see they get to a point where they are in fact putting on 5-6 too many lbs. At that point we know exactly how much they are eating every day and its easy to cut back 1/2 cup or so at a time once every few weeks to find that point of equilibrium.

We recently delivered one of our puppies as a prospect for police training to an officer in northern Alabama. Both parents were from Czech pedigrees and both were IGP titled. Not only was mom to this litter IGP titled, but she was a daughter of 2 x WUSV world champion Gero z Berounsky basty, arguably one of the most famous working line German Shepherd stud dogs in the last several decades. Gero’s obedience, tracking and protection scores during his exams were routinely near 100. As close to perfect as a dog could score. Dad to this litter consistently produces high drive puppies with tons of prey drive. It took no work at all to get these puppies doing bite work. By 6-7 weeks of age they were already on their own ready to bite and hold chew toys. Fantastic ball drive. Couple this with a good off switch, a must have in a dog that will serve the public, the trainability of these kinds of dogs is exactly what we want to see in both a police dog for sale as well as a good family protection dog. This girl we recently sent home to Alabama will most assuredly do great in both the police department as well as in the home. Because health is one of our first concerns, we simply cannot breed show line dogs. The extreme roach back (slope to topline and slanted hindquarters) has become so extreme in most show dogs, these dogs have arguably become physically deformed. My wife Heather is a labor and delivery nurse. If one of her babies at the hospital came out with the human equivalent spine to what we see in the show lines, they would consider the human baby to have a serious health problem. This extreme roach back too often leads to undue pressure on joints and can often lead to joint problems and dysplasia developing as the dogs age.

The second main reason why we don’t ever mix show lines in with our working lines has to do with trainability. Our tag line here at Czech Working Line German Shepherds is that our goal is to raise health dogs that live a long time and are super easy to train.

How do we get to the super easy to train part of things? That process starts with pedigrees full of dogs that has actually passed all manner of exams. Our studs are always IGP titled. We simply don’t use a stud that has not been able to pass his IGP obedience, tracking and protection exams. Our dogs must have a good off switch! that is non-negotiable. With six of our own children. Its important that when our dogs come in the house, they are good with kids.

For these reasons and more, we only raise working line German Shepherds, never mixing with show lines.
