Following World War 1, the British popularized the name “Alsatian Shepherds,” a description of the border area of Alsace-Lorraine between Germany and France. This name gained such popularity that the breed’s name was nearly changed. The rationale was a move to mitigate anti-German rhetoric. This alternate name gained official status and was used until 1977 when a petition was made and granted to reinstate the original name.
