Working-line Czech German Shepherds

Czech Working Line German Shepherds, specializing in producing and selling world-class Czech German Shepherds.

If you are reading this page, you probably found our website having searched for more info on Czech German Shepherds? On this page you will learn about our Czech Shepherd breeding program. We will share key reasons why we specialize in Czech line German Shepherds. We will unpack some of their unique attributes. And, if you are looking to buy a German Shepherd puppy, we will give some compelling reasons to not only buying a Czech German Shepherd puppy, but to make your purchase here at Czech Working line German Shepherds.

Czech Working Line German Shepherds, who we are!

We are German Shepherd Dog breeders and trainers in Oklahoma. Here at Czech Working Line our passion is producing healthy, highly trainable Czech German Shepherds. We are third generation dog breeders and trainers. There are seven in our family involved in dog breeding and training. Three of our six children are still at home. In addition to my wife and I, all three play an active role in raising our puppies. One of our adult children lives close by. He also plays an active role. Having people of varied ages, young and old, works to benefit of socializing our puppies. Socialization is important for all German Shepherds, including those raised primarily as pets. But in our case, since our focus is on working line Czechoslovakian Shepherds, we consider highly socialized puppies doubly important.

Our Czech Shepherd puppies make great family protection dogs.

With working line German Shepherds bred for genetic capacity to serve families as personal protection dogs, deterrent dogs, and for Schutzhund sport, we recognize the importance of well-socialized puppies. Who would have thought children playing with puppies (such hard work, right!) would be such a valuable task! With lots of love and laugher with our kids, this frees my wife and up to engage our Czech line puppies more actively in puppy obedience training. Many of the puppies we sell are sold as trained German Shepherd puppies. This is not to say they leave our home ready for work as highly trained protection dog. Of course not, a trained deterrent dog will not to have reached maturity before capable of serving well as a trained guard dog.

Many of our Czech Shepherd puppies are sold with basic puppy obedience training.

In most cases the training our Czech Shepherd puppies receive is basic puppy obedience training. The kind of training that makes the transition from our home to yours so much easier. We generally focus on this introductory puppy training on potty training, crate training, walking on leash, sit, stay— that sort of thing. Not all the puppies we sell leave with training. Some are sold as green dogs, with no training at all. Some receive a modest degree of introductory training. And others still get the whole enchilada, spending several months really getting the basics locked down before leaving.

As Czech German Shepherd breeders, we are a family oriented.

We are not commercial breeders, rather a small family program. But while the number of litters we produce is limited. We don’t have employees. Nor is our Czech Shepherd breeding program a full time endeavor. Heather has spent the last thirty years working as a labor nurse. She works full time down in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I, Chad, work with a startup tech company. Raising German Shepherds has been a labor of passion and great opportunity to raise some fairly great kids. The life skills our children have learned through their shared experiences have been invaluable. Raising our Czech German Shepherds has been a whole family endeavor on our part. And this works well as a majority of the puppies we sell tend to be purchased by families. With so many of our dogs purchased with the goal of serving as family protection dogs, having our children involved from birth in socializing our puppies has proven a real benefit. If you are reading this page describing our Czech German Shepherd breeding program and are wanting a family friendly dog, you have come to the right place.

Czech German Shepherds with a good off switch.

Raising six children of our own, Heather and I have long considered a good off switch an absolute must. This is especially true for the kind of dogs that are bred with the genetic capacity to serve as trained guard dogs— whether this be as family protection dogs, deterrent dogs, or more serious personal protection dogs. If you dog has these kind of instincts and will ever be around children, you will absolutely want a dog that comes from a bloodline that has a good off switch. Sadly, to many German Shepherd breeders and trainers mistake aggression for “look at my dog’s desire for protection.” No, your dog is just mean. I can attest to first hand experience with dogs not quite right.

Years ago I imported a male adult from Europe. I won’t say from which country. But it from a highly sought after breeding program. One day he gave me the side eye with a stiffening of the tail that made it clear I should pay attention. I wasn’t far from my tractor. I quickly decided I should hop up and take precautions. That boy was immediately removed from our breeding program. All our IGP titled, protection trained dogs must be the kind of dogs that will lay on the couch watching Sponge Bob with our kids. Without that clear off switch, we don’t use a dog for breeding.

A good Czech German Shepherd stud dog will be one that scores high in both temperament testing as well as in their IGP exams. They will be dogs that demonstrate a high capacity for training. By this we mean they are super easy to train. But a great stud dog will be one that has all those attributes we just described, plus has that great off switch where they are love people, especially kids.

Czech Shepherds as dry dogs.

When we describe our Czech Shepherds as dry dogs, we don’t mean they are teetotalers— alcohol abstainers… Rather, this technical phrase is used to describe dogs with stable nerves. A trait to watch for in protection dogs is a nervous temperament. Too often dogs that bite without provocation are nervous dogs. With a family member serving in the greater Indianapolis area as a police officer, we hear all too often how sub-standard temperament can lead to trained guard dogs biting. With many law enforcement on limited budgets, many police dogs end up biting handlers and people they should not. Some of this is due to poor nerves. They are not “dry dogs,” dogs with stable nerves. Nervous nellies bite when they should not.

Similar to the above description of a good “off switch,” your better Czech German Shepherd bloodlines will be those dogs with stable nerves. Dogs can be active, high drive dogs with tons of ball and prey drive and still be “dry dogs.” Stable nerves does not go hand in hand with being a couch potato. Not at all! Rather, stable nerves point to a dog’s confidence. It is not a nervous dog. And these “dry dogs” with stable nerves are precisely the kind of dogs we prioritize as Czech German Shepherd breeders. It’s exactly the kind of dog that makes sense in a home with lots of children like ours. And if you are here on our website, looking to purchase a Czech German Shepherd puppy for sale, choose something that comes from a line of dry dogs. Choose a puppy from proven working lines. Stay clear of show lines.

All our Czech German Shepherds are from working lines— NEVER SHOW LINES.

Two reasons prevent us from ever mixing in show lines with our working line Czech Shepherds. These are both health and temperament. As you can see from our above description of a good off switch and stable nerves, choosing a puppy from the right kind of pedigree makes sense. Even then, there are no absolutes. Even the best of pedigrees throw the occasional lemon. But we don’t ever raise show line dogs. Not ever. Let me share why.

First, AKC champion show dogs (or their counterpart in Europe) are arguably not much more than glorified beauty contests. I don’t say this as one who is casting stones from the sidelines. Not at all. I have personally owned multiple dogs where we finished those dogs as show champions. So, much to buy chagrin, I speak from a position of first hand experience. As a third generation dog breeder of show dogs, I have personally participated in making many of the mistakes I am about to share with you. My parents and grand parents before me all raised show line dogs. As did my wife and I during our early years in adulthood. We no longer do this— with a vengeance. I can’t hardly describe the frustration I feel with the process of showing German Shepherds. Let me hit some highlights with you.

Czech German Shepherds and working line IGP titles.

German Shepherds were conceived and developed as working line dogs. What do we mean by the term “working dogs?” During the late 1800’s, German Shepherds served as a dual purpose breed. They protected both the agrarian Shepherd (the human person protecting flocks of animals) as well as the animals for which the Shepherd cared. Early in the development of German Shepherds as a breed, the Industrial Revolution was fast changing the landscape and culture of European farming practices. By the early 1900’s German Shepherd breeders had largely transitioned the breed away from the broader dual purpose of both human and livestock protection. The breed focused narrowed to working primarily to tracking and human protection.

It is for this reason Schutzhund trials require a dog pass three exams in order to achieve an IGP title. German Shepherds earning a working, IGP title are required to pass an obedience exam, an exam in tracking and an exam in protection work. Earning a title requires the dog typically undergo one or more years of intensive training. Obedience training is foundational. If a dog cannot perform obedience work to a high level, there is no point in training that dog for tracking and especially no point in training that dog in protection work. Unlike a show championship, a working title involves testing the dog against an objective standard. The working title is somewhat analogous to a high school graduate passing their ACT.

Working line titles contrasted with show line championships.

Compare a working line title with a show championship. They are night and day different— world’s apart! Earning a show championship is primarily the result of purebred, registered dogs trotting in a show ring. Judges score their movement and conformation. But remember this. A dog ALWAYS win. The dogs in the show ring might be just awful. They might look like crossbred muts. But this doesn’t matter. One dog always wins. But this isn’t the real problem. When it comes to German Shepherds, the bigger problem is that this breed was selected as a working breed. As one of the founders of the breed once stated, great German Shepherds are always going to be great working dogs (loosely paraphrased). Captain Emile Stephanitz, one of the men credited with an oversized influence on the development of the German Shepherd breed had no category for a German Shepherd that was not also a working dog.

The problem with show line German Shepherds!
And so, one of the great pitfalls of show line German Shepherds is that many of these dogs are never required to prove their ability to actually “do” the work for which German Shepherds were created. Many of these dogs are arguably little more than the “barbie dolls of German Shepherds.” As more and more generations of purebred breeding occurs without those dogs being required to prove their ability to thrive as actual working dogs, more and more of these dogs lose their genetic instinct to perform according to the working standards for German Shepherds. They can’t track and worse yet, they lose their innate protection instincts. Many times, the show line German Shepherd is not much more than an oversized, plush couch warmer— and perhaps your best friend. But their ability to work as protection and deterrent dogs has literally been bred out of them.

We ONLY breed Czech German Shepherds from proven working lines!

Here at Czech Working Line, we ONLY raise litters from proven working lines— never show lines. Committed German Shepherd breeders dedicated to raising dogs that are highly trainable, litters of Czech Shepherd puppies that are super easy to train, one of the ways we accomplish this is by only using breeding stock from titled pedigrees. Again, by titled pedigrees we are referring to Schutzhund titled, dogs that have passed objective IGP exams. We are not speaking of AKC champion dogs. We are referring to dogs that have earned their working titles, proving their ability in obedience, tracking and protection work. Look at any of our breeding stock and you will find a pedigree where most every dog in their five to six generation pedigree has been IGP titled.

By starting with this foundation, we set up our future litters for success. We set YOU up for success. Planning on buying a Czechoslovakian German Shepherd puppy? Choose to purchase one of our Czech line German Shepherd puppies for sale knowing we have done the hard work of choosing the highest caliber breeding stock. Not only are our dogs from imported Czech pedigrees, we have actively sought out dogs from some of highest scoring pedigrees world wide. Take two littermate sisters we imported. Two sisters out of Gero z Berounsky basty. Gero is a two time world champion, WUSV winner. Not only has he been one of the highest scoring IGP dogs in the world, he has earned this honor not just once, but twice. Then, the icing on the case is Gero’s ability to pass on this high trainability to the third and fourth generation!

Value in Czech German Shepherd stud dogs.

Our IGP 3 titled stud Querro we imported directly from the Czech Republic at close to five years of age. Querro is a phenomenal picture of both beauty, grace, and highly trainability all wrapped into one package. You can see Youtube video of Querro in protection training, here and here. Vik Eqidius co-owned with one of my adult sons is another example of an old-wold, truly authentic working line Czech German Shepherd. See Vik’s pedigree here on working-dog

Purchasing a Czech line German Shepherd puppy from a breeder specializing in authentic, proven working lines sets you up for success. Building on that foundation, purchasing a Czech Shepherd from imported, lines that are nearly entirely titled— now you are on your way to scoring a home run. As with all breeding programs, none of this ever guarantees the end result. But for sure, choosing from a litter whose pedigree is chock full of highly titled, proven working dogs. Now that’s a great start. And that’s what we are all about here at Czech Working Line. We are all about stacking the deck in favor of producing the highest caliber, world-class Czech German Shepherd puppies we can produce!

Historical development of Czech Shepherds, and how their unique history has influenced GSD breeding.

During the height of the Cold War, the Czechoslovakian government formed a government funded, military run breeding kennel. This Czech military breeding program was named the Kennel z Pohranicni Straze. This program was established in the mid 1950’s. The singular goal of this program was the breeding and production of dogs to be used in military and police applications. Similar to the DDR breeding program, the Pohranicni kennel focused on developing athletic, powerful dogs, with dark pigmentation on muzzle and around eyes. Unlike the show lines, this military breeding program emphasized the ability to work as a non-negotiable minimum for breeding. Dogs were required to pass stringent exams proving their ability to excel in obedience, tracking and protection work in order to enter the z Pohranicni Straze breeding program.

DDR German Shepherds imported for early z Phranicni Straze foundation stock

During the early days, most of the German Shepherds brought into the z Pohranicni breeding program came from the “Deutsches Demokratishe Republic (DDR,” otherwise known as the German Democratic Republic. During this Cold War Era, Germany had divided into two states. The DDR dogs coming from the German Democratic Republic were East German Dogs, vastly different than their western counterparts. Under the East German’s stringent guidelines, hip dysplasia was all but eliminated. Dogs were required to scale 6 foot tall vertical walls. The Czech z Pohranicni Straze breeding program continued with many of these same stringent protocols in developing their breeding program.

Z Phranicni Straze in Border Patrol Work

During the Cold War, Czech line German Shepherds were used in active border patrol work, helping to apprehend as many as several dozen persons each day in attempts to cross the country’s border without permission. Protection training in this context was no mere sport. The dogs were often called on to protect their handlers against real and imminent danger. Protection work, then, was real world protection, not just a sport. Here at Czech Working Line, our intent is to carry on this tradition of producing dogs with real inherited capability of thriving as protection dogs. And this is where the strong nerves come into play. Like the DDR lines, the Czech line German Shepherds were aggressively culled if lacking strong nerves. Dry dogs (dogs with calm, stable temperament were chosen). These are dogs today with a good off switch. Dogs with situational awareness whom are able to make sense of when to play and when to protect. Here at Czech Working Line we would contend that too many aggressive dogs lacking strong nerves as being bred on the basis that aggression has been mis-interpreted as protection. These two traits are not the same. Worried that you just might get bit isn’t necessarily a sign of a really high drive dog. Often it can be a sign the dog is not a “dry dog,” meaning in lacks stable, strong nerves. Beyond a shadow of doubt, GSDs with strong nerves can be off the charts in prey and ball drive without the handler being at constant risk of getting bit.

Transition from Border Patrol to Police Dogs

With the January 1, 1993 peaceful dividing of Czechoslovakia into two distinct countries— the Czech Republic and Slovakia— the z Pohranicni Straze breeding program saw many changes. Starting in 2001 the Czech military breeding program saw many changes. With the 1993 dissolution of the country into two separate states, the z Pohranicni Straze breeding program saw its name change to “od Policie Ceske Republiky.” The modern day Czech breeding program rebranded continues the old legacy of producing strong, athletic protection dogs with strong nerves and a deep-seated penchant for protection.

As breeders of Czech German Shepherds, our goal is to produce better and better working line German Shepherd puppies for sale that not only make great personal companions, but also serve as ideal police dogs! Going back generations we have been selecting for highly biddable protection dogs. This is the only way the police dogs for sale we offer are consistently able to meet the challenge of a high stress workplace.

Without a doubt, we consider the biddability (ease of training) in our Czech German Shepherd one of our highest priorities. Prioritizing pedigrees that produce Czech German Shepherds with a high capacity for protection work set our customers up for dogs that consistently exceed expectations. Producing great prospects for protection work requires all our Czech German Shepherd breeding stock start with the strongest of nerves in combination with dogs that are super easy to train.

Owe a debt of gratitude to Czech military breeding program.

As many GSD enthusiasts have discovered, Czech German Shepherds have distinguished themselves as some of the world’s highest caliber working line dogs. UIniquely suited to obedience training and protection work, Czech German Shepherds owe a debt of gratitude to . This combination of traits is the result of half a century of rigorous breeding practices. The meticulous selection process employed by Czech breeders and its military has resulted in these dogs being some of the most sought after protection dogs globally.

Our lines include both Schutzhund titled Czech and DDR pedigrees.

As noted earlier in our brief outline of the historical development of the z Pohranicni Straze breeding program, the Czech lines were seventy-five years ago built on the old Cold War East German (DDR) lines. And so, we ought not be surprised to see similarities between these two working line German Shepherd bloodlines. Here at Czech Working Lines, our breeding stock comes from imported Czech and German working lines. Every pedigree is full of Schutzhund/IGP titled parentage. This is a rule we simply do not break. Not ever! Our aim is to have at least 95% or more of every dog in a 5-7 generation pedigree trace back to Schutzhund titled dogs. Every IGP titled has passed obedience, tracking and protection exams. These are the kinds of dogs demonstrating a high capacity for a calm temperament during times of  high stress. These are dogs with dry nerves. Building on dogs with dry nerves allow our Czech German Shepherd puppies for sale to stand apart from the pack as some of the highest caliber German Shepherd puppies for sale in all the USA.
