Working Line German Shepherd puppies for sale FAQs

Your questions answered!

Have you looking working line German Shepherd puppies for sale? These active dogs need plenty of exercise. Whether you live out in the country with room to roam, or in town, a space for exercise will be vital. If you are an active family that enjoy the outdoors, this breed can be a great addition to your family. If you have been searching for German Shepherd puppies for sale from true, authentic working lines, we can help.

We would contend the German Shepherd breed has essentially separated into two distinct categories: working line German Shepherds and the show lines. For a more in depth look at these differences see a recent article we posted on this subject here. Arguably, there is no comparison in the health between working line German Shepherds and their show line counterparts. It’s by no means by accident. Czech and DDR rules based military breeding programs gave a wonderful gift to the world in their strict breeding programs. By excluding dogs with poor health and nerves, strict exclusion, their programs made fantastic steps forward in German Shepherd breeding. You can read more about that here.

The working lines tend to have a much flatter back. The extreme roach backs and slanted hindquarters in show lines lead to hip and elbow joint problems. The working lines have kept with the original conformation common to virtually all GSD from the late 1800’s and typical until the last three to four decades.

Additionally, many of the working line German Shepherds are Schutzhund, IGP titled dogs are tested. These exams prove a dog’s character and ability to thrive in high level obedience training. Dogs lacking a high capacity to thrive in obedience, tracking or protection work are excluded from breeding. Serious about finding a puppy with potential to be a good family protection dog— or something more serious— give us a call.

If you need help finding a local trainer, we can help with this task. We also provide basic obedience training when requested. We often two option. Option one is thirty days of training. Option two is a full 2 months. Our add on training package is an extra fee at a cost of $1500 for first month or $2500 for two months.

Both phases of our “Puppy Boot Camp” cover introductory obedience themes. These include but are not limited to:

  • crate training
  • potty training
  • leash training
  • sit
  • stay
  • lay down
  • drop chew toy

Phase one introduces these concepts and goes from 6-10 weeks of age. Phase two further drills down on cementing in these obedience skills and extends from weeks 10-14. Your puppy will not necessarily be proficient in all these areas. But will be on his way to learning these concepts.

If you as an owner are interested in some serious training classes where you can up your game as a dog trainer, whether for your own dog, or a side hustle, I could not recommend Chris and Bree at mydogtrainer.com more highly. See here for link to their website.

  • Breeding Advantage: Using an DM clear (N/N) stud ensures that no offspring will be at risk for DM, even if the dam (female) is a carrier or at risk.
  • Health Focus: Responsible breeders aim to reduce the prevalence of DM in their breeding lines by selecting DM-clear studs and dams.
  • Our stud Querro is a great example of an IGP 3 titled, DM clear, working line German Shepherd stud.

DM testing generally results in three groups of dogs:

  1. Clear (N/N): The dog carries two normal copies of the SOD1 gene. This German Shepherd is not at risk of developing DM. It will not and can never pass the DM mutation to its offspring.
  2. Carrier (N/DM): The dog has one normal gene and one mutated gene. They won’t develop DM, but  with every puppy, there is a 50% change a single copy of the DM gene can be passed on. Put another way, for every ten puppies that are born, statistically, in this situation. Half will inherit one copy of the gene from a parent carrying one copy of DM and half will not inherit a copy from that parent. But to be clear. No dog with one copy of the gene will be DM affected. It requires two copies of the gene for a dog to present with symptoms and actually be DM affected. Dogs with no or one copy of the DM gene will never become DM affected.
  3. At Risk (DM/DM): The dog with two copies of the mutated gene and is at risk of developing DM later in life. In order for a dog to inherit two copies of DM, both parents must carry the gene and a dog must inherit a copy of the gene from both parents. Such a problem is easily avoided. Simply do no breed two carries together. And just like that, no dog produced from these matings will ever be DM affected. This is one of the reasons why we here at Czech Working Line only ever use DM clear studs. We will never buy a carrier for this reason. By only ever using DM clear studs, we can never produce a DM affected litter or puppy.

Our dogs have been selected for character and temperament with a good off switch. By this we mean dogs that can thrive in protection work, but can turn it off when they come in the house with the kids. A great off switch is the key to finding a great dog that has both protection instincts but is also a good fit when it comes to family and children. Our working line German Shepherd puppies for sale make good family protection dogs.

Working line German Shepherds are uniquely suited to obedience and protection dog sports. Unlike an AKC show championship where a dog is graded primarily for its conformation and movement as compared to the breed standard, a working title scores a dog against an external, objective standard. It’s like an exam that the dog passes or fails. Before participating in a Schutzhund exam, a dog must first pass a temperament exam. Then, during the IGP title exams, the dog must pass three tests: one in obedience, and one in second in tracking and a third in protection work. The dog must pass all three in order to earn an IGP/ Schutzhund title.

As German Shepherd Dog breeders committed to improving working line German Shepherds, our focus is nearly entirely on Czech German Shepherds as well as DDR German Shepherds (also known as East German Shepherds). With the Czech and DDR military breeding programs imposing such rigorous standards, far exceeding that of West German Cold War breeding programs, the lasting benefits of these rules based breeding systems has left an indelible mark on the breed. Requiring dogs to scale six foot vertical fences rather than lower sloped walls resulted in these military breeding programs developing powerful, athletic dogs. Strict adherence to culling dogs with even the slightest hint of dysplasia resulted in the virtual elimination of hip dysplasia. Sadly, so many German Shepherd breeders today no longer employ such standards. Here at Czech Working Line, this is our goal. To recommit to these standards of holistic health. Give us a call to learn more about what we are doing with our German Shepherds here at Czech Working Line.

Many of the dogs in our pedigrees have served as police dogs. These will tend to be those dogs with a higher prey drive and a more serious nature. If you are working with your local police department and searching or police dogs for sale or perhaps a future prospect for such work,  ask about our upcoming litters.
